

Kigali, 6 February 2026 — Rwanda held the 20th National Umushyikirano Council on 5–6 February 2026, bringing together national leaders, local government officials, representatives from the private sector, youth and women groups, civil society organizations, and members of the Rwandan diaspora.


The Umushyikirano Council is a major national platform where citizens and leaders openly discuss Rwanda’s development priorities, assess progress made in various sectors, and propose solutions to challenges affecting communities.
Key discussions focused on development and citizens’ welfare
During the two-day forum, several priority topics were addressed, including:
- Economic growth and investment
- Job creation and opportunities for youth
- Modern agriculture and livestock development
- Education and technology-based skills
- Public health and social protection
- Good governance and anti-corruption efforts
- National security and regional cooperation
- Infrastructure development and urban planning
Participants highlighted that Umushyikirano remains an important space for direct dialogue, allowing citizens to raise questions, express concerns, and seek clarification from decision-makers.
Citizens raised concerns and proposed solutions
Several issues were strongly emphasized by participants, including:
- The need for sustainable job opportunities, especially for young people;
- Support for farmers through affordable agricultural inputs, improved market access, and storage facilities;
- Further improvements in service delivery at local government level;
- Increased efforts to provide affordable housing and promote organized urban development.
Some participants also raised concerns about the cost of living and market prices, calling for continued attention to the welfare of low-income households.
Leaders presented strategies and ongoing interventions
Government officials and sector representatives used the forum to explain national strategies aimed at strengthening the economy, expanding employment opportunities, and accelerating development programs.
They stressed that Rwanda’s ongoing initiatives in agriculture, industrialization, technology, and social development are designed to enhance national productivity and improve the living standards of citizens.
Umushyikirano as a symbol of inclusive governance
The 20th Umushyikirano Council reaffirmed Rwanda’s commitment to inclusive governance, emphasizing dialogue, unity, and citizen participation as key drivers of national development.
Many participants described Umushyikirano as a unique tradition that strengthens accountability and ensures that national priorities remain aligned with citizens’ needs.


Hope for follow-up and implementation
As the 2026 Umushyikirano concluded, participants expressed hope that the discussions and recommendations will be followed up through concrete actions and measurable outcomes.
The 20th National Umushyikirano Council ended with renewed confidence in Rwanda’s continued progress through participatory governance and collective responsibility.
